Oliver Bearman's superb debut has amplified the voices calling for more young talent to be given a place in Formula One.
The cause has already been championed by Ralf Schumacher, who somehow never forgets to turn up where there is a good media opportunity... Schumacher is all praise for Fernando Alonso's performance, but also sees F1's ageing grid as a very serious problem.
"More opportunities for the young! Forty plus drivers lining up for the grand prix doesn't really reflect well on the sport. We need to increase the number of test days and help integrate talented young drivers into the sport. If there is no opportunity, then it should be created, because we have seen Oliver Bearman show the value of the talon. Now 42-year-old Alonso is racing for them. Of course, I have a lot of respect for Fernando, but F1 should not aim to push the average age further and further out. We don't have a junior team so that these guys can be lost," said Ralf.
Well, perhaps you are forgetting, dear Ralf Schumacher, that not all young people are as talented as Bearman, and not all are as sensational as Fernando Alonso?
