The world of Formula 1 is still reeling from the shock of Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari in 2025. However, there's another ticking time bomb here!
For example, who will replace the seven-time world champion from the next season onwards? Wilder and wilder theories are emerging on this matter, but since it concerns Mercedes, it's wise to stay grounded in reality. In our opinion, the following candidates have the greatest chance of filling Hamilton's shoes...
Fernando Alonso
Everyone is aware of the qualities of the two-time champion, and the timeless Alonso, if given a competitive car again in his career, will surely be one of the contenders for the championship. The big question is what Aston Martin can offer him this year; if things turn sour with the green team, then a switch is by no means unthinkable.
Carlos Sainz
Sainz is the biggest loser of Hamilton's signing. The Spaniard did an excellent job at Scuderia Ferrari in 2023, being the only one capable of challenging Red Bull Racing. There was no reason for him to be replaced. However, his forced departure also holds opportunities, perhaps in the form of the Mercedes seat aiming to return to the top.
Mick Schumacher
Although the younger Schumacher has distanced himself from Formula 1 for a while, we all know the connections he maintains with Mercedes, particularly with Toto Wolff. It's also entirely clear that this period in the team's life is more about building than winning championships, and there would be hardly a better candidate than Mick Schumacher for this branding exercise.
