What’s Going Wrong for Piastri as Verstappen Dominates F1?

As the Formula 1 season barrels forward, one storyline dominates conversations around the paddock: Max Verstappen's utter command at the front of the field. The reigning World Champion continues to set a benchmark of performance that leaves rivals scrambling for answers, blending relentless speed with surgical precision. But as he strengthens his grip on the title race, another narrative is quietly seeping into the minds of F1 fans — the recent struggles of Oscar Piastri, the McLaren driver once tipped as a future great.

Verstappen’s dominance hardly needs explanation. Red Bull’s technical prowess, coupled with Max’s unyielding focus and adaptability, have made him the driver to beat every weekend. Practice after practice, qualifying after qualifying, he extracts every millisecond from the RB20 — even when the car isn’t perfect. Psychologically, he’s also a step ahead: calm under pressure, quick to seize opportunity, and never content to simply manage a lead. The Dutchman’s tire management, race starts, and in-lap/out-lap combinations are making it nearly impossible for even seasoned rivals to challenge him.

Meanwhile, teams such as Ferrari and McLaren have shown flashes of brilliance, but inconsistency plagues their efforts. Ferrari’s strategy nightmares still haunt them on occasion, while McLaren seem to oscillate between podium threats and midfield anonymity. Lando Norris has been the standout performer, but his teammate Oscar Piastri is now attracting unwelcome scrutiny. What’s happening to the Australian's form, and how much is it linked to the car, the tyres, or the pressure of high expectations?

Piastri burst onto the scene last year, immediately impressing with his cool consistency and smart race craft. Early 2024 has proved more challenging. Results haven’t lived up to his nor the fans’ expectations, especially by comparison to Norris, who managed to claim a win and several impressive podiums. Several analysts have pointed to Piastri’s ongoing adaptation to McLaren’s updates; the car’s narrow operating window can make it difficult, even for talented drivers, to find the sweet spot. The team’s rapid development, while aggressive and necessary, means Oscar is still learning how to unlock the full potential of each upgrade at every type of circuit.

Another factor is the tyre management puzzle. The current generation of Pirelli tyres is notoriously sensitive, and extracting the right performance across a race stint is a skill that even seasoned drivers sometimes struggle with. Piastri, while quick over a single lap, appears to be struggling more with tyre degradation and thermal management, particularly when conditions change. This, in turn, impacts his race pace and the ability to go wheel-to-wheel with frontrunners — a critical skill if he hopes to consistently challenge for podiums.

Yet it’s far too early to write Piastri off. He’s shown resilience in adversity and flashes of brilliance that prove his underlying talent is intact. Patience will be key: McLaren have already stated their faith in their young star, and as the season rolls on, expect him to knuckle down with his engineers, analyse the data minutely, and return stronger as he adapts to both the car and the relentless mental grind of Formula 1.

For fans, the Verstappen era is a study in what happens when man and machine operate in near-perfect harmony. But lurking in the shadows is always the next great hope — and if Oscar Piastri can overcome these mid-season struggles, the sport will be all the richer for it. The chase for perfection continues, and as always, anything can still happen in Formula 1.
