Max Verstappen has acknowledged the impressive start to the 2026 Formula 1® season by Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli. Despite Verstappen’s own challenging campaign, he praised Antonelli’s consistency and character as the young driver leads the championship by a significant margin.

Antonelli currently holds a 50-point lead over his closest rival, Lewis Hamilton, in the Drivers' Championship. The Mercedes driver secured his first Grand Prix victory in the second round in China and followed it up with five consecutive wins, making him the youngest-ever leader in the championship standings. Although Antonelli faced setbacks, including a mechanical failure that led to a retirement in Barcelona and reliability problems at Silverstone, Verstappen described his performance as “rock solid” and “really impressive.”

Verstappen, who races for Red Bull Racing and sits sixth in the standings, 110 points behind Antonelli, highlighted the difficulties his team has encountered this season. He pointed out the need for Red Bull to improve overall performance and address reliability issues that have affected their race weekends. Despite these challenges, Verstappen remains focused on racing and appreciates the competitive spirit Antonelli brings to the sport.

Beyond his driving skills, Verstappen also praised Antonelli’s personality, calling him a “nice guy” and a “very strong driver.” This recognition from a multiple-time world champion underlines the respect Antonelli has earned within the paddock during the first half of the season. Verstappen’s comments reflect the current competitive dynamics in the championship, with Mercedes showing strong form through Antonelli and Hamilton.

While Verstappen’s own season has been difficult, he remains committed to extracting the best from his car and enjoying the racing whenever possible. His acknowledgment of Antonelli’s performance highlights the challenges Red Bull Racing faces as they seek to regain competitiveness in the championship.

The 2026 season continues to develop with Antonelli’s strong start setting a high benchmark. Verstappen’s remarks offer insight into the ongoing rivalry and the efforts of teams to improve as the championship progresses.
