Max Verstappen has identified the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku as Red Bull Racing’s best opportunity to secure a race win this season. Despite the challenges faced during qualifying, Verstappen believes the unique characteristics of the Baku circuit offered the team a strong chance to compete at the front, although technical issues and the pace of Mercedes limited their prospects.
During qualifying in Baku, Verstappen encountered a problem with the internal combustion engine (ICE) that affected his lap time and ultimately cost him a better starting position. Before further complications arose, including a yellow flag and battery issues, Verstappen was already losing around half a second on the straights compared to his teammate Isack Hadjar. He qualified eighth, while George Russell of Mercedes claimed pole position and regarded Verstappen as his main rival for the race.
Verstappen acknowledged Mercedes’ strong pace and the fact that they were expected to bring significant upgrades at the Malaysian Grand Prix. Red Bull, on the other hand, had already introduced their final major upgrade of the year by the time of the Azerbaijan round.
