Sepang returns for 2026 season

FansBRANDS® Team |

Formula 1® is set to return to the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia for the 2026 season, marking the first race at the venue since 2017. The circuit will host the Bahrain Grand Prix, stepping in after a nine-year absence and bringing back a track known for its unique challenges and rich history within the sport.

Sepang previously held the Malaysian Grand Prix 19 times between 1999 and 2017, establishing itself as one of the early new-generation permanent circuits on the calendar. Its flowing layout, combined with hot and humid weather conditions and occasional rain, has long made it a physically demanding venue for drivers. The track is also noted for offering multiple overtaking opportunities, which adds to its appeal from a racing perspective.

Several current Formula 1® drivers have experience racing at Sepang, including Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, and Max Verstappen. Alonso, who has won three times at the circuit (in 2005, 2007, and 2012), described the return as a “golden ticket,” highlighting the physical challenge posed by the high temperatures and humidity. Hamilton recalled fond memories of both the track and Kuala Lumpur, emphasizing the demanding nature of the circuit on driver fitness. Verstappen, the last winner at Sepang in 2017, expressed enjoyment of the track but also joked about being glad to have won the final race there before the hiatus.

Among the 22 drivers on the 2026 grid, ten have previously raced at Sepang, while twelve have not. Those without prior experience have been preparing through simulator work, with Lando Norris noted for having some indirect experience via sim support roles. Kimi Antonelli, who leads the 2026 World Championship, is looking forward to the challenge, pointing out that tyre degradation and unpredictable weather will be key factors in the race’s complexity.

The return of Sepang is expected to test drivers’ physical endurance and strategic skills due to the demanding environmental conditions and the circuit’s characteristics. Teams such as Mercedes AMG F1, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Red Bull Racing, and McLaren will face the task of adapting to the track’s nuances after nearly a decade away from the venue.

This event will reintroduce a classic venue to the Formula 1® calendar, offering a blend of technical driving challenges and strategic considerations shaped by weather and tyre wear. The perspectives shared by experienced drivers underline the significance of Sepang’s return and the unique demands it places on competitors in the sport.
