George Russell secured pole position in the Sprint Qualifying session at the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, marking a strong return for Mercedes after the summer break. The session highlighted a competitive field with several teams testing upgrades ahead of the Sprint Race and main Qualifying.
Russell’s pace was impressive, while his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli faced challenges after sustaining floor damage from a gravel excursion during the first Sprint Qualifying segment, which affected his final position of fifth. McLaren showed promising form with Lando Norris qualifying second and Oscar Piastri fourth, benefiting from recent upgrades. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was close behind in third, whereas Lewis Hamilton struggled to find rhythm and qualified seventh.
Red Bull had a mixed Sprint Qualifying, with Max Verstappen managing sixth place despite balance issues, and rookie Liam Lawson narrowly missing out on the third segment. Alpine introduced upgrades on Pierre Gasly’s car, helping him secure eighth place, while Franco Colapinto, running an older specification, qualified 13th.
Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto reached the third segment with a ninth-place qualification, while Nico Hulkenberg was 14th. Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindblad adapted well to the Zandvoort circuit on his first outing, making it into the third segment, whereas Yuki Tsunoda, returning after a long absence, qualified 12th. Haas experienced difficulties, with Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman finishing 15th and 17th respectively, affected by limited upgrades and other issues.
Williams awaited upgrades as Carlos Sainz struggled with balance and gravel incidents, qualifying 18th, and Alexander Albon took 16th. Aston Martin encountered driveability problems despite running Honda’s upgraded power unit, with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll qualifying 22nd and 19th. Cadillac lost both cars in the first Sprint Qualifying segment due to steering and brake issues, with Valtteri Bottas 20th and Sergio Perez 21st.
Pirelli reported that tyre degradation remained under control during the session, with all compounds considered viable for race strategies. Variable weather and wind conditions were noted, with possible rain forecasted for the Sprint Race, which could influence team approaches.
The Sprint Qualifying session at Zandvoort provided teams and drivers with valuable feedback on their upgrades and car performance.
