Russell on pole after Leclerc crash at Barcelona

George Russell set the pace in Barcelona, nailing a 1:14.679 lap to claim pole position – his third of the season – and underline Mercedes’ qualifying speed. Lewis Hamilton was hot on his heels with a 1:14.743 effort to slot into second place, while Andrea Kimi Antonelli wrapped up the top three after a 1:14.998 flyer.

Charles Leclerc’s bid for a front-row start came to a premature end when he crashed at the opening moments of Q3, leaving him without a representative time and ultimately down in tenth. His misfortune opened the door for the tight midfield fight just behind the leaders.

Behind the front-runners, the midfield was tightly packed. Lando Norris secured P4 while Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar lined up in P5 and P6 for Red Bull Racing. Oscar Piastri claimed P7, showing McLaren’s depth in qualifying, and the final Q3 spot went to Nico Hulkenberg, who qualified ninth for Audi. Gabriel Bortoleto will start from 12th, with Carlos Sainz leading the Williams contingent in P16 as Alexander Albon was unable to progress beyond Q1. Drivers from Haas, Alpine, Racing Bulls, Cadillac and Aston Martin fill positions eight through twenty-two, setting up a mixed grid for the start.

Team feedback suggests that Pirelli’s compounds will suffer significant wear at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, making tyre degradation a key concern. With at least two pit stops expected, strategic calls on stint lengths and compound choice could prove decisive in carving out race positions.

Mercedes will be buoyed by Russell’s pole and Antonelli’s podium start, pointing to a package that remains formidable in qualifying trim. Turning that raw pace into race consistency will be their main challenge, as Sunday’s conditions often reward those who can balance outright speed with tyre preservation.

Ferrari emerged with mixed fortunes: Hamilton’s second-placed lap confirmed the team’s potential, yet Leclerc’s crash served as a stark reminder of how quickly a strong weekend can slip away. Recovering through race pace and smart strategy will be critical if they are to make up ground.

Just a few tenths covered P4 through P9 in qualifying, hinting at an intense midfield scrap off the line. With a range of manufacturers represented – from Haas and Alpine to Racing Bulls, Cadillac and Aston Martin – the opening laps are likely to feature wheel-to-wheel battles as each team fights to capitalise on their starting slots.

As the Spanish Grand Prix weekend moves into race day, the grid promises a compelling blend of speed, strategy and unpredictability. Whether lights out at turn one or the calculated chess match in the pits, this field is ready to deliver.
