George Russell's 2026 Formula 1® season has been notably affected by a series of reliability problems, which have cost him a significant number of championship points. Most recently, his retirement from the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, while running in third place, resulted from a power unit failure and is estimated to have cost him around 15 points.
Over the course of the season, Russell has experienced three retirements: in Canada, Hungary, and Bahrain in Malaysia. These incidents, along with other technical issues, have contributed to an estimated total loss of 56 points due to reliability setbacks. For example, a battery failure in Canada forced him to retire from a position that could have yielded at least 18 points, while a water leak and anti-stall problems in Hungary led to a compromised race and an estimated loss of six points.
Other technical challenges have also affected Russell’s performance. Gearbox and vibration issues in Japan and China impacted his qualifying and race results, potentially costing him additional points. At Spa, a start-line deployment problem followed by a collision with Lewis Hamilton caused another retirement, with an estimated 12 points lost. These setbacks have widened the gap between Russell and his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, who currently leads him by 84 points after the Malaysia race, where Antonelli finished second and scored 18 points.
Antonelli has also faced his share of reliability issues this season, with an estimated 36 points lost. However, some of his difficulties have allowed Russell to gain positions in certain races. Mercedes as a whole has struggled with power unit reliability, affecting both its works team and customer teams. Despite these challenges, Mercedes maintains a strong lead over Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship.
Looking ahead, Russell is set to start the Singapore Grand Prix from the back of the grid due to penalties related to these reliability problems. The accumulation of technical setbacks this season has made his championship campaign more difficult, although the exact impact on his title chances remains uncertain.
These developments underline the ongoing reliability challenges faced by Mercedes and their drivers in the 2026 season. Russell’s situation highlights how technical issues can influence the points standings and the dynamics within a team, especially when both teammates encounter setbacks. The upcoming races will be crucial in assessing how Mercedes manages these difficulties and how Russell adapts to the evolving circumstances on track.
