Red Bull’s Strategy Secures Verstappen’s Second Place

Max Verstappen secured second place at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, a result shaped significantly by Red Bull Racing’s bold and adaptive strategy decisions. Despite challenges with car balance and handling, the team’s approach throughout the race helped Verstappen achieve his fourth podium finish of the season.

Red Bull’s strategy involved starting Verstappen on medium tires, switching to hard compounds mid-race, and then fitting soft tires for the final stint with 32 laps remaining. This sequence was considered a “spicy” and risky call but ultimately paid off. During a late Virtual Safety Car period, the team chose not to pit Verstappen, prioritizing track position, a decision that proved crucial in securing second place.

The race weekend was not without difficulties for Red Bull. Both Verstappen and his teammate Isack Hadjar reported struggles with the car’s balance and handling, with Verstappen noting that the car was not in an ideal window for pushing. Hadjar finished sixth, despite a compromised strategy aimed at holding off rivals during pit stops. Team boss Laurent Mekies praised the pit wall and strategy group for their quick reactions and strong execution under changing race conditions.

Verstappen’s performance was notable as he was only clearly outpaced by Lando Norris of McLaren during the race. The Dutch driver also made one of the standout overtakes of the day by passing Lewis Hamilton, which contributed to his final position. Mekies acknowledged the ongoing challenges Red Bull faces in delivering a consistently competitive car but highlighted positive signs from Verstappen’s result.

Heading into the summer break, Red Bull remains fourth in the Teams’ Championship, 43 points behind McLaren. Verstappen’s next race will be his home Grand Prix at Zandvoort, where the team will look to build on the momentum gained in Hungary despite the difficulties experienced during the weekend.

The Hungarian Grand Prix underlined how strategic decisions can influence race outcomes even when the car’s performance is not at its peak. Red Bull’s willingness to take calculated risks with tire choices and pit stop timing played a key role in Verstappen’s podium finish and demonstrated the importance of adaptability in the dynamic environment of Formula 1® racing.
