Piastri Shocks Mercedes With Stunning Pace in Japan FP2!

Friday’s second free practice session at Suzuka saw a fascinating shake-up at the top of the leaderboard, with Oscar Piastri delivering a blistering best time that put the McLaren driver ahead of a hard-charging Mercedes duo. The session, marked by rapid improvements and razor-thin margins, hinted at a thrilling qualifying and race weekend in store for Formula 1 fans.

Conditions in Japan were near perfect for quick laps, and teams wasted no time unleashing their true pace after a conservative opening practice. Piastri, who has continued to impress in his sophomore season, managed to string together a near-flawless lap on the soft compounds, edging both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell in their newly upgraded Mercedes machinery. Not only did this cement McLaren’s credentials as genuine top contenders on a high-downforce circuit, but it also served as a warning shot to their rivals ahead of crucial battles in the midfield and at the very front.

While Piastri made the headlines, the rest of the field wasn’t far behind. The Mercedes cars, fresh from a suite of updates, showed significant gains and appeared much more comfortable in the twisty sectors of Suzuka. Both Hamilton and Russell looked consistently fast over long runs, setting up an intriguing contest with not just McLaren, but also Red Bull, who were uncharacteristically further adrift in the timesheets than many had expected.

Red Bull, usually the favourites, had a surprisingly muted session. Both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez struggled to find the sweet spot in setup, sliding through the esses and lacking the usual dominance on single-lap pace. Verstappen’s frustration was notable over the radio, as it became evident that his RB20 was more of a handful than he’d like. Still, neither team nor fans are writing them off just yet—Red Bull has a well-earned reputation for turning things around when it matters most, especially in Sunday’s race conditions.

Ferrari, meanwhile, hovered just outside the top positions, focusing their run plan on higher-fuel stints and tire data rather than outright speed. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz both hinted at underlying pace that could surprise come qualifying, but it’s clear the Italian squad wants to ensure they have every detail nailed for what is expected to be a complex strategic race.

A special mention goes to Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin. The Spaniard, ever the wily veteran, managed a set of laps that suggested he—and his team—have found a baseline setup that works at Suzuka’s demanding corners. While he may not have topped the timesheets, his long-run consistency was among the session’s most notable performances and could place him as a dark horse heading into Sunday.

Japanese fans were treated to a glimpse of local hero Yuki Tsunoda’s talents as well. Driving for RB, Tsunoda turned in a respectable session, finishing just outside the top ten and matching up well against teammate Daniel Ricciardo. The packed grandstands erupted whenever he flashed past, underscoring the passion the Suzuka circuit is famous for.

All eyes now turn to the rest of the weekend, as teams pour over data to optimize setups and strategies. With the margins so close at the top, qualifying promises intense drama—and with McLaren, Mercedes, and perhaps even Aston Martin sniffing at Red Bull’s heels, fans are in for a classic Suzuka showdown. If the action and surprises from FP2 are anything to go by, the Japanese Grand Prix could deliver one of the most thrilling races of the season.
