Piastri reflects on McLaren’s need to improve

Oscar Piastri shared his thoughts on McLaren’s performance following the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, where he finished sixth, matching his starting position. Despite a solid personal drive, Piastri acknowledged the team’s need to improve their overall pace to better compete with the frontrunners.

The race was affected by heavy rain, which delayed the start and complicated tyre strategy decisions. McLaren initially opted for medium tyres, a choice that proved suboptimal given the wet track conditions. Piastri pitted at the end of the first lap to switch to intermediate tyres, which caused him to lose positions. Later, during the first Safety Car period, he made a second stop to change to hard tyres. An incident during the final Safety Car phase saw Piastri narrowly avoid a collision with teammate Lando Norris.

Reflecting on the race, Piastri felt he drove well but admitted that McLaren’s pace was not sufficient to challenge the top teams. He pointed out that Red Bull Racing has shown strong performance recently, particularly after upgrades introduced in Baku, with Max Verstappen securing the race win. Piastri also noted that McLaren and Ferrari appear to be in a similar performance bracket but are currently not on the level to contend for victories.

The race conditions and strategic challenges highlighted the difficulties McLaren faced in adapting to the changing track. Piastri’s tyre choices and pit stops reflected the team’s efforts to find the best approach, although the initial medium tyre call did not pay off. The close call with Norris underlined the intensity of the race and the fine margins involved in navigating safety car periods.

In his assessment, Piastri emphasized that while his personal performance was solid, the team’s overall speed needs to improve to close the gap to leading teams like Red Bull and Ferrari. The recent upgrades by Red Bull have strengthened their position, making it more challenging for McLaren to break into the top ranks.

McLaren’s current standing alongside Ferrari suggests a competitive midfield battle, but both teams face a clear challenge in matching the pace required to fight for race wins. Piastri’s comments underline the ongoing work needed within McLaren to enhance their car’s performance and race strategy.

This evaluation from Piastri offers a candid view of McLaren’s situation after the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, focusing on the team’s pace and race execution. It reflects the realities faced by teams striving to improve within the competitive environment of Formula 1®.
