Mercedes to challenge George Russell’s Monaco penalties at FIA hearing

Mercedes to challenge George Russell’s Monaco penalties at FIA hearing

Mercedes has been granted a hearing by the FIA to review the penalties given to George Russell during the Monaco Grand Prix. This development follows Alpine’s successful appeal against Pierre Gasly’s pitlane speeding penalties, which led to a reassessment of stewarding decisions from the race.

The FIA confirmed that Mercedes lodged a Right of Review petition concerning Russell’s penalties at Monaco. The hearing is set to take place on the Saturday before the Austrian Grand Prix and will be conducted in two stages. The first stage will assess whether new significant evidence exists, and if so, the second stage will examine the substance of Mercedes’ challenge. Russell initially received a five-second penalty for pitlane speeding, followed by a drive-through penalty for incorrectly serving that initial penalty, which ultimately saw him drop out of the points.

This review comes after Alpine successfully overturned Gasly’s two pitlane speeding penalties due to an incorrect pitlane timing system setup, which restored Gasly’s podium finish. The timing system error acknowledged by Formula One Management raises questions about whether Russell was wrongly penalised. Meanwhile, McLaren and Red Bull have protested the reinstatement of Gasly’s penalties, as it affected their drivers’ final positions.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has stated that the team will pursue the review despite acknowledging that the chances of success might be slim. The outcome of the hearing remains uncertain, and it is not clear if Mercedes is also challenging the reinstatement of Gasly’s penalties or focusing solely on Russell’s case. The hearing’s decision could potentially affect the official results from the Monaco Grand Prix.

Russell’s penalties at Monaco had a significant impact on his points tally, leaving him without any points from the race and influencing his championship battle with Kimi Antonelli. The hearing will therefore be closely watched for its potential implications on the drivers’ standings and team strategies moving forward.

As the FIA process unfolds, the focus remains on the accuracy and fairness of stewarding decisions, especially given the technical issues with the pitlane timing system. The review highlights the complexities involved in race management and the importance of reliable systems in ensuring equitable outcomes in Formula 1®.
