Mercedes aims to fix Russell’s power unit issue

Mercedes has traced the performance irregularities experienced by George Russell between the British and Belgian Grands Prix to a software issue within his Formula 1® power unit. The problem affected the energy deployment strategy, leading to a noticeable drop in straight-line speed and power availability in the later sectors of the races.

Telemetry data comparisons between Russell and his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli revealed that the power unit itself was not losing power or top speed outright. Instead, the issue was linked to the timing of electrical energy deployment, which was occurring too early in the lap. This caused an imbalance in energy distribution, particularly reducing the electrical power available in the final sector at Spa.

After several days of detailed analysis, Mercedes engineers identified the root cause deep within the power unit management software. A correction has since been implemented at the team’s Brixworth engine facility, but the fix still requires validation under race conditions. Due to the nature of the issue and track characteristics, Mercedes plans to confirm the effectiveness of the software update at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, as other recent venues like the Hungaroring and Zandvoort are less suitable for testing this specific problem.

Some members of the Mercedes team believe that Russell’s driving style may have amplified the software issue. The power unit software includes adaptive logic that learns driver habits, and this may have influenced how the electrical energy was deployed during laps. However, this remains a team belief rather than a confirmed fact. Importantly, Mercedes does not intend to replace the power unit itself, confident that the software fix will address the problem.

At the Hungaroring, where straight-line speed is less critical, Russell was able to focus more on overall performance without the previous concerns about power unit behaviour. This suggests that the issue’s impact varies depending on track layout and conditions.

Mercedes’ identification of this software-related cause clarifies the source of the performance anomalies that affected Russell’s pace between Silverstone and Spa. The upcoming Italian Grand Prix will provide the first opportunity to assess whether the implemented fix fully resolves the energy deployment imbalance and restores consistent power delivery throughout the lap.
