At the start of the 2026 season, Mercedes showed strong form with the W17 car, securing a 1-2 finish in Australia and accumulating eight wins in the first 11 races. However, Mercedes technical director James Allison explained that the team deliberately delayed the "design freeze" of the W17. This decision allowed them to incorporate more early-season updates directly into the launch car, effectively compressing the manufacturing timeline and leaving limited room for contingencies.
This strategy initially gave Mercedes a significant performance edge, with an advantage of roughly half a second. Yet, it also meant that Mercedes fell "out of phase" with other teams in terms of in-season development. Rivals such as Ferrari and McLaren introduced updates earlier in the season, gradually eroding Mercedes’ initial lead. Allison noted that aerodynamic gains in the wind tunnel are substantially higher this year—about six to seven times greater than the previous season—translating to roughly half a second of performance improvement every two months.
Currently, Mercedes finds itself about a race or two behind its rivals in the update cycle. Despite this temporary lag, the team expects to regain its advantage as new developments arrive. The fluctuations in performance between teams can largely be attributed to this timing difference in upgrade deployment rather than a fundamental shift in car capability.
