McLaren’s recent performance improvements in the 2026 Formula 1® season have been linked not only to aerodynamic developments but also to a key technical upgrade involving their front wheels. This change has played an important role in better managing tyre temperatures and improving overall competitiveness, particularly on circuits demanding high downforce.

The upgrade introduced new front wheel rims and wheel covers designed to enhance tyre temperature control and reduce aerodynamic drag. These rims, produced by Enkei, feature internal cavities or “pockets” that help retain heat within the front tyres. This design addresses previous challenges McLaren faced with warming up the front tyres effectively, which had led to graining and reduced grip in earlier races such as Monaco, Australia, and China. Notably, the rear rims were left unchanged to avoid overheating the rear tyres, which were already prone to degradation.

These technical changes contributed to McLaren’s performance jump at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, where Lando Norris secured pole position. The team’s success at Zandvoort marked their second consecutive win following Budapest, highlighting that the upgrades went beyond simply restoring lost aerodynamic load. According to McLaren technical director Neil Houldey and team principal Andrea Stella, the combination of improved aerodynamic efficiency and better front tyre temperature management helped the car perform more competitively on fast and long corners.

McLaren’s front wheel rims incorporate a novel design with internal pockets that help trap heat, allowing the front tyres to reach optimal temperature more quickly. This improvement was particularly important given the team’s earlier difficulties in generating sufficient front tyre temperature, which had negatively impacted their performance in several races during the season. By contrast, the rear wheels remained as before to prevent excessive heat buildup, which could accelerate tyre wear.

The impact of these upgrades was most visible on high-downforce circuits like Budapest and Zandvoort, where the car’s enhanced ability to maintain front tyre temperature translated into improved grip and cornering speed. This allowed McLaren to compete more effectively in sections of the track requiring sustained high-speed turns. The team’s technical staff noted that the results exceeded their initial expectations in terms of competitiveness.

While the upgrades did not guarantee large lap time gains on their own, they formed a crucial part of McLaren’s package that helped the team overcome previous limitations related to tyre management. Lando Norris’s pole position at Zandvoort served as a clear indicator of the positive effect these changes had on the car’s performance under qualifying conditions.
