McLaren tops FP2 at Barcelona as Russell shines in FP1

The opening day of practice at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya offered valuable insights into car performance and tyre behaviour as teams prepared for the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix. With two one-hour sessions on Friday, FP1 and FP2, drivers and engineers collected data under clear skies and consistently warm track temperatures. This laid the groundwork for strategic decisions heading into qualifying and the race proper.

Mercedes showed early promise when George Russell delivered the fastest lap in FP1 with a 1:16.363 effort. He then carried that momentum into FP2, securing second place with a 1:15.435, underscoring the team’s pace over a single lap and its growing confidence in car balance around Barcelona’s varied corners.

McLaren stole the headlines in the second session, with Lando Norris topping the timesheet at 1:15.426. Oscar Piastri supported that performance by slotting into third, while Charles Leclerc guided Ferrari to fourth. Kimi Antonelli completed the FP2 top five, demonstrating that the championship contenders are closely matched in outright speed.

Ferrari faced some challenges on Friday, with Lewis Hamilton ending FP2 in ninth place after reporting front-wing issues that limited his running. Dino Beganovic impressed in FP1 by securing eighth on the timesheet, hinting at potential for the Scuderia’s junior programme. Over at Red Bull, Max Verstappen led his team in FP1 with fourth and then slipped to sixth in FP2 as the only driver to try the Hard tyres. Isack Hadjar rounded out the session in tenth after exploring different compounds.

Further down the order, Racing Bulls displayed steady progress when Arvid Lindblad posted seventh in FP2. His teammate Liam Lawson encountered a gearbox problem that restricted him to 13th. Audi drivers found mixed fortunes: Gabriel Bortoleto took eighth in the afternoon, Paul Aron impressed with sixth in FP1, and Nico Hülkenberg logged an 11th-place finish across the combined running.

Haas names filled the lower midfield spots as Oliver Bearman claimed 12th in FP2 while Esteban Ocon managed 17th overall. Williams drivers struggled to find rhythm, with Carlos Sainz ending FP2 in 14th and Alex Albon slotting in at 19th, while Luke Browning was unable to complete laps in the first session.

Alpine carried on gathering useful data, with Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto finishing 16th and 15th in FP2, respectively, following the team’s successful appeal to reinstate their Monaco podium. Cadillac saw Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez occupy 18th and 20th places in FP2, and Colton Herta recorded 21st in the morning. Aston Martin closed the timesheets with Fernando Alonso 21st and Lance Stroll 22nd in the afternoon run.

Pirelli’s engineers noted that all compounds suffered from high thermal degradation under Barcelona conditions, pointing towards a two-stop strategy as the most likely race scenario. The Medium and Soft tyres showed similar wear rates, while the Hard compound struggled to maintain operating temperature, adding another layer of complexity to weekend preparations.

As teams assess their Friday progress, the focus now shifts to fine-tuning aerodynamic balance and tyre management ahead of qualifying. With lap times so close between the leading outfits, every session will count as strategies evolve.
