At the 2026 United States Grand Prix, McLaren made a strategic decision that highlighted the contrasting strengths of its drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Team principal Andrea Stella explained why Piastri was instructed to let Norris pass early in the race, emphasizing Norris’s adaptability as a key factor on the challenging Circuit of The Americas.
Both McLaren drivers started the race from the fourth row but struggled to match the pace of the leading teams Mercedes, Red Bull, and Ferrari. Over the first seven laps, Piastri lost about a second per lap to race leader Kimi Antonelli and was notably slower than Mercedes driver George Russell. Norris, meanwhile, reported over the radio that he was being held up by Piastri. Responding to this, the team asked Piastri to allow Norris through on lap eight, after which Norris quickly pulled away, extending a gap of four seconds over the following seven laps.
The difference in performance was attributed to the drivers’ individual strengths relative to the track’s demands. According to Andrea Stella, Norris’s ability to adapt quickly to changing conditions gave him an advantage at COTA, a circuit known for its variable lap characteristics. Piastri, on the other hand, excels at building consistent lap times once he has established a rhythm, but the fluctuating nature of the track challenged this approach.
McLaren’s race strategy also reflected this understanding. Norris ran a one-stop strategy on hard tyres in an attempt to challenge the top teams, while many others opted for two stops on softer compounds. Norris maintained second place until lap 46, before being overtaken by Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, and Max Verstappen, eventually finishing fifth. Piastri finished seventh, ahead of George Russell, marking a respectable result despite the earlier pace deficit.
Stella also touched on the importance of team unity and managing internal competition, especially following the collision between Norris and Piastri during the Singapore sprint race. The decision to have Piastri yield to Norris was part of a broader effort to maximise overall team performance and avoid intra-team conflicts.
Currently, McLaren is experiencing its longest podium drought since late 2023 and early 2024, underscoring the challenges the team faces in closing the gap to Mercedes, Red Bull, and Ferrari. The events at the United States Grand Prix illustrate how driver characteristics and adaptability to specific circuits can influence race strategy and outcomes within a team.
This analysis from Andrea Stella provides insight into McLaren’s approach to balancing driver strengths and team objectives in the 2026 Formula 1® season.
