McLaren is set to introduce its own version of the rotating rear wing, known as the H-Wing, at the 2026 Formula 1® Italian Grand Prix. This aerodynamic device is designed to flip 180 degrees between cornering and straight-line modes, aiming to balance downforce and drag depending on the racing situation.
The H-Wing concept draws inspiration from Ferrari’s rotating rear wing, which was first seen during winter testing. McLaren initially brought a prototype of the H-Wing to the Austrian Grand Prix but was unable to run it in free practice due to a garage issue. A revised version was later tested during the first practice session at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The team plans to run the H-Wing on both cars at Monza, a circuit known for its low-drag, high-speed characteristics that suit this kind of upgrade.
McLaren’s technical director, Neil Houldey, explained that the H-Wing is part of the team’s ongoing efforts to extract more performance from the MCL40. The device’s name refers to the letter H found in the Etihad Airways logo displayed on the rear wing, rather than any cultural or cinematic reference. The upgrade will be evaluated throughout the Italian Grand Prix weekend, with the team monitoring its impact before qualifying sessions.
The rotating rear wing concept aims to improve aerodynamic efficiency by adjusting the wing’s angle: increasing downforce in corners for better grip and flipping to a low-drag position on straights to boost top speed. While Ferrari pioneered this approach earlier in the season, McLaren’s version represents their interpretation of the technology, tailored to their car’s specific aerodynamic package.
Oscar Piastri, one of McLaren’s drivers, is expected to run the H-Wing during the Italian Grand Prix, alongside his teammate. The team’s decision to debut the device at Monza aligns with the track’s characteristics, where reducing drag is particularly beneficial. Additionally, McLaren will feature a modified livery at Monza and the Spanish Grand Prix to highlight its partnership with cryptocurrency company OKX.
Although detailed performance data or the reliability of the H-Wing have not been disclosed, McLaren’s introduction of this rotating rear wing marks a notable step in the aerodynamic development race within the Formula 1® paddock. The team’s cautious approach to evaluating the upgrade during the race weekend reflects the complexity of integrating new aerodynamic components under competitive conditions.
