McLaren and Central Saint Martins Celebrate Racing Heritage

FansBRANDS® Team |

McLaren Racing recently marked a unique milestone by hosting its first-ever fashion show, “Designed to Race: Front Row,” at the McLaren Technology Centre. This event brought together the worlds of motorsport and fashion through a collaboration with 46 MA fashion students from Central Saint Martins. Over nine months, these students developed a 12-look runway collection inspired by more than six decades of McLaren’s Formula 1® history.

The collection was divided into five thematic chapters—Grit x Glamour, Precision and Power, Global Icon, Engineered Athlete, and Papaya Era—each reflecting different aspects of McLaren’s racing heritage. Iconic figures such as James Hunt, Ayrton Senna, and Emerson Fittipaldi influenced the designs, alongside contemporary elements from the team’s current Papaya era. Materials used included carbon fibre, upcycled racing seatbelts, and repurposed McLaren equipment, highlighting a creative approach that blended engineering with fan culture.

The fashion show transformed the Technology Centre into a runway, showcasing these innovative designs alongside historic racewear and championship-winning cars. McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri attended the event, as did F1 Academy drivers Ella Lloyd and Ella Stevens, along with Freddie Hunt, son of James Hunt. McLaren Racing’s Chief Marketing Officer Louise McEwen emphasized the connection between high performance in sport and fashion, noting the importance of engaging a younger and more diverse fanbase that expresses fandom through style.

Central Saint Martins’ MA Fashion Course Leader Fabio Piras highlighted the project’s focus on creativity and interpretation rather than commercial production. The students drew inspiration not only from McLaren’s racing icons but also from the engineering precision and athleticism that define the team’s approach. This blend of sport, culture, and creativity aimed to open a broader conversation about how motorsport heritage can influence contemporary fashion.

The event attracted a diverse audience from motorsport, fashion, music, and sport, reflecting McLaren’s ambition to bridge different cultural spheres. The presence of historic cars and racewear alongside the student designs underscored the depth of McLaren’s legacy and its ongoing innovation beyond the racetrack. This collaboration offered a fresh perspective on how Formula 1® teams can connect with fans through new forms of expression.

Overall, the “Designed to Race: Front Row” fashion show illustrated McLaren’s commitment to celebrating its heritage while embracing modern creativity. By partnering with Central Saint Martins, McLaren Racing has highlighted the evolving relationship between sport and culture, appealing to fans who see fashion as an extension of their passion for racing.
