Charles Leclerc secured second place in qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, but his feelings about the session were mixed. While he was pleased to earn a front-row start, the gap to pole position was larger than anticipated, leaving some room for reflection on Ferrari’s performance.

Leclerc posted a lap time of 1m 43.363s, narrowly edging out McLaren’s Oscar Piastri for the second spot on the grid. However, he was 0.837 seconds slower than George Russell, who took pole position. The Ferrari driver acknowledged that the team had struggled throughout the weekend, particularly on Friday, but found some encouragement after the final practice session.

Despite the front-row result, Leclerc pointed out Ferrari’s ongoing difficulty with straight-line speed. He remains hopeful that race pace will be more competitive, but the qualifying gap to Mercedes was a clear reminder of the challenges still faced by the Scuderia.

Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, described his qualifying experience as difficult, especially in Q3. The Mercedes driver qualified sixth and explained that losing the tow from his teammates left him vulnerable on track. Hamilton said he initially was ahead of Leclerc but ended up about 25 seconds behind during the session, losing any aerodynamic advantage he might have had.

Hamilton expressed uncertainty about his prospects in the race, noting that overtaking could be challenging. Most of the cars powered by Mercedes engines qualified ahead of him, with Leclerc being the only exception. This situation underlined the importance of track position in Baku’s tight and fast layout.

George Russell capitalized on the opportunity created by teammate Kimi Antonelli’s early exit from qualifying to claim pole position. Russell’s performance highlighted Mercedes’ strength in this session, contrasting with Hamilton’s struggles to find the ideal tow and pace.

The qualifying session painted a clear picture of the current form of Ferrari and Mercedes at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Leclerc’s mixed feelings reflect the balance between a solid grid position and the recognition of areas needing improvement. Hamilton’s comments on being a “sitting duck” underline how crucial team dynamics and track position are in such a demanding qualifying format.
