Laurent Mekies reshapes Red Bull for 2026 challenges

FansBRANDS® Team |

Laurent Mekies marked his first full year as Team Principal at Red Bull Racing in mid-2026, overseeing a period of significant internal change despite the team holding fourth place in the Teams' Championship. While the current standing mirrors their position a year earlier, the story behind the scenes reveals a team in transition rather than stagnation.

After replacing Christian Horner in mid-2025, Mekies focused on completing the development of the 2025 car late into that season. This strategic choice delayed the start of work on the 2026 car, contributing to a slower beginning for Red Bull in the current season. However, this approach was validated by Max Verstappen’s strong finish in 2025, winning six of the last nine races and narrowly missing out on the title.

During his first six months, Mekies conducted a thorough assessment of Red Bull’s strengths and weaknesses, which led to substantial personnel changes. Early in 2026, the team recruited around 130 new staff members and saw key technical shifts, including the departure of Chief Designer Craig Skinner and the arrival of Ben Waterhouse and Andrea Landi. Red Bull’s new wind tunnel, an important development tool, is not expected to be operational until 2027, meaning its benefits will likely impact cars from 2028 onward.

One of the technical challenges for Red Bull’s 2026 car has been recurring rear wing issues, which have affected overall performance. Despite these difficulties, second driver Isack Hadjar has shown promising form in his second season, regularly finishing in the top six and closely matching Verstappen’s pace. Meanwhile, Verstappen’s future with Red Bull remains uncertain, though staying with the team currently appears to be the most viable option given the limited alternatives.

Mekies’ main task continues to be delivering a competitive car that allows Verstappen to contend for victories again. While no wins have been secured so far in 2026, the internal restructuring and fresh personnel signal a longer-term plan rather than immediate results. The team’s position in the championship does not fully capture the scale of changes underway.

Red Bull Racing’s situation in mid-2026 reflects a team balancing ongoing development challenges with strategic rebuilding. Mekies’ leadership has brought a clear focus on strengthening the team’s foundation, which may shape their competitiveness in the seasons ahead.
