Grid penalties have been confirmed for Isack Hadjar, Arvid Lindblad, and Franco Colapinto ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, scheduled for early October 2026. These penalties arise from the drivers exceeding the allocated number of power unit components allowed under the current Formula 1® regulations.

Isack Hadjar and Arvid Lindblad, both racing for Oracle Red Bull Racing, along with Alpine’s Franco Colapinto, will face grid drops due to power unit element changes. Hadjar is set to take his seventh internal combustion engine (ICE) this season, surpassing the limit of four, which results in a five-place grid penalty. Lindblad has exceeded multiple component limits, including his fifth ICE, fifth turbocharger, and fifth exhaust set, leading to a cumulative 30-place grid penalty that will place him at the back of the grid. Colapinto, who already carries a five-place penalty from a previous collision in Azerbaijan, will take a fifth ICE and receive an additional 10-place grid penalty, increasing his total grid drop for the event.

According to FIA regulations, the first time a driver exceeds the allocation for a power unit element, a 10-place grid penalty is applied. Subsequent breaches of the same element within the same event result in five-place penalties, which are cumulative. If the total penalty exceeds 15 grid places, the driver is required to start from the back of the grid. These rules aim to manage reliability and costs while maintaining competitive fairness across the season.

The Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia is scheduled to start at 15:00 local time on Sunday, with qualifying taking place the day before at 16:00. These penalties will directly affect the starting positions of Hadjar, Lindblad, and Colapinto, potentially influencing their race strategies and opportunities during the event.

Oracle Red Bull Racing faces a mixed situation with Hadjar and Lindblad both impacted by power unit component limits. Hadjar’s five-place drop reflects a single element breach, while Lindblad’s more extensive penalties indicate multiple component changes, resulting in a significant grid demotion. Alpine’s Colapinto will contend with an increased penalty total due to the combination of his previous collision-related drop and the additional power unit penalty.

These grid penalties highlight the ongoing challenge teams and drivers face in managing power unit usage throughout the demanding Formula 1® season. Balancing performance and reliability while adhering to strict component limits remains a critical aspect of race weekend preparation and strategy.

The confirmed penalties for Hadjar, Lindblad, and Colapinto will shape the grid lineup for the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, underscoring the importance of power unit management in the 2026 Formula 1® season.
