George Russell praises Ferrari’s pace but warns Mercedes

At the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, George Russell emerged with a blend of satisfaction and caution after turning pole position into a solid second-place finish. Although he led much of the race weekend, he ultimately had to yield top honours to Lewis Hamilton, who executed a flawless three-stop strategy for Ferrari.

Russell’s P2 marked his first podium appearance since the Chinese Grand Prix, ending a spell that included a retirement in Canada and a non-points finish in Monaco. Despite missing out on victory, the result underlined both his growing momentum and Mercedes’ continued competitiveness.

Kimi Antonelli, currently at the summit of the championship standings, had been pressuring Russell for the runner-up spot but retired late in the race. That development allowed Russell to trim his deficit to the points leader from 68 down to 50, tightening what had been a sizeable gap.

In the immediate aftermath, Russell was quick to praise Hamilton’s approach to tyre management and overall race control, acknowledging the lessons available from his former teammate. His observations cast a spotlight on just how significant Ferrari’s recent upgrade package has been.

Describing the Scuderia’s performance gains as “mighty impressive,” Russell made it clear that Mercedes cannot afford to stand still. He warned that his team must “keep on pushing” through further development if they hope to counter Ferrari’s rapid progress.

With the championship battle heating up and Ferrari enjoying a surge in pace, Mercedes faces a pivotal stretch of the season. Consistency, reliability and timely upgrades will all be essential if Russell is to close in on both race winners and the series leader.
