Formula 1 is on the cusp of a seismic shift, with 2026 promising an overhaul that could redefine racing as we know it. The new regulations, set for implementation two years from now, were conceived with two primary aims: to create more exciting races, and to advance the sport’s sustainability. However, as the first glimpses of these radical changes emerge, many within the paddock—and legions of F1 fans—are left wondering: will these new rules genuinely make overtaking easier, or will they unwittingly hinder the wheel-to-wheel drama fans crave?

At the heart of the 2026 changes is a dramatic transformation of technical regulations. The cars will be more compact, lighter, and notably less reliant on aerodynamic downforce. Now, their efficiency will lean heavily on active aero elements and a greater proportion of power from the hybrid unit—fueled by 100% sustainable fuels. The rhythm and strategy of racing will pivot significantly from current norms. Yet, amid this technological leap, there are real concerns about how these changes will impact the very DNA of racing: close competition and overtaking.

One of the most pronounced worries comes from the proposed shift toward an “active aero” philosophy, with front and rear wings capable of switching between two settings: “X” for corners (maximum downforce) and “Z” for straights (minimal drag). The promise is that this will reduce drag on straights and theoretically level the playing field in terms of speed differences. However, simulations and expert opinion cast doubt on whether this will tangibly improve overtaking, particularly as the new designs seem to offer fewer possibilities for creative strategies currently enabled by the DRS (Drag Reduction System) zones.

The 2026 car's active aerodynamics have a double-edged effect. While theoretically both cars in a duel could benefit from a low-drag setting on the straights, this could encourage “Peloton-style” trains, with racers unable to enact a meaningful speed differential required to pass. Unlike the current DRS approach, where the chasing car in a specific zone has a decisive advantage, the 2026 rules could see everyone switch to minimal drag on every straight. That means the energy deployment and racecraft, rather than raw straight-line speed, could take center stage. This would reward drivers who are clever with battery management and decision-making—but risks neutering some of the spectacular overtakes fans have come to expect.

Another facet complicating things is the shift to a 50-50 power mix between internal combustion engine and electric deployment, up from the current 80-20. This amplifies the importance of energy recovery, and opens the door to clever battery tactics. Next-generation power units’ increased electrical output—without the turbo’s traditional boost at lower speeds—brings challenges like energy “bog down” out of tight corners. Drivers might need to carefully juggle power application, possibly leading to fierce strategic battles, but also to frustration for those stuck in traffic with depleted batteries.

Despite these radical technical steps, there’s trepidation within teams and among drivers that overtaking may not become any easier than it is today. In fact, there’s a risk that, should everyone be incentivized to harvest energy at similar points and deploy at the same places, we could end up with longer DRS trains or even processional races where passing is almost impossible. While simulation tools are sophisticated, nothing compares to data from real racing—and history shows that new regulations often throw up unexpected consequences once the racing begins.

It’s not all doom and gloom, however. The FIA is well aware of the overtaking debate and has pledged to work with teams, drivers, and F1 itself over the next two years to fine-tune the regulations. The intention: ensure that technical innovation doesn’t come at the expense of pure racing spectacle. As testing, simulations, and development progress, we can expect iterative tweaks to create the ideal harmony between sustainability, speed, and showmanship.

For Hungarian F1 fans and global enthusiasts alike, the run-up to 2026 promises endless intrigue. Will we see the dawn of a genuinely new era in racing, or will the quest for sustainability and technical advancement compromise the relentless drama of on-track combat? One thing’s certain: as always in Formula 1, the battle off the track to perfect the rules will be nearly as captivating as the racing itself.
