Drivers recharge during 2026 summer break

FansBRANDS® Team |

The 2026 Formula 1® season features a mid-season summer break that offers drivers a chance to recharge both mentally and physically. This pause comes after the Hungarian Grand Prix and before the Dutch Grand Prix, with a two-week FIA-mandated factory shutdown where no car development or official testing is permitted.

With the championship highly competitive—having seen five different winners in the last five races—drivers and teams alike use this break to recover and prepare for the demanding second half of the season. The shutdown affects all teams on the grid, including Mercedes and Aston Martin, as they pause factory operations in line with FIA regulations.

Drivers approach the break in various ways. George Russell highlighted his readiness for the downtime, citing the intensity of the first half of the season. Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli mentioned that after a few days of rest, he expects to get bored and plans to spend some time practicing go-karting. Many others disconnect by spending time in nature, with activities such as surfing, hiking, and meditation being popular choices. Lewis Hamilton, for example, is known to engage in meditation during his breaks.

Beyond rest and outdoor activities, many drivers pursue hobbies unrelated to racing. Charles Leclerc enjoys playing the piano, Liam Lawson spends time with his guitar, and Valtteri Bottas keeps fit through cycling. Gaming remains a popular pastime for drivers like Lando Norris and Max Verstappen, while padel tennis has gained traction among several members of the paddock. Physical fitness is maintained through low-impact exercises such as swimming, yoga, stretching, and light recovery rides, helping drivers stay ready without risking injury.

Carlos Sainz plans to combine golf, padel tennis, and family time during the break. Some younger drivers, including Franco Colapinto, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Jak Crawford, take part in Pirelli tyre testing sessions during this period. Rookies often return to karting to keep their racing instincts sharp while away from the Formula 1® calendar.

The summer break serves as a necessary pause in a demanding season, allowing drivers to rest, reconnect with personal interests, and prepare for the challenges ahead. The two-week factory shutdown ensures a level playing field regarding car development, emphasizing the importance of recovery and mental focus during this interval.
