The 2026 Formula 1® regulations brought significant changes to power unit management, introducing increased software control over energy deployment. This shift has sparked debate among drivers and teams, particularly at circuits where battery recharge is limited. Despite these challenges, driver skill remains a vital component of performance in the evolving technical landscape.

One of the main issues under the new rules is the heavy reliance on software algorithms to manage power unit energy deployment. Drivers have voiced frustrations, especially on energy-starved tracks where the balance between corners and straights restricts battery recharge opportunities. Ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, a regulatory adjustment aimed to reduce some of the erratic performance differences caused by these algorithms, often referred to as “yo-yo racing.” However, variations in power unit software still influence lap times and race pace.

Oscar Piastri of McLaren described the racing under these conditions as a “pretty crap way of going racing,” highlighting the dissatisfaction among drivers. Yet, the FIA has maintained its stance, emphasizing that drivers must compete “alone and unaided,” and has not banned the use of machine-learning tools within power unit management. This regulatory position underscores the ongoing tension between technological intervention and driver autonomy.

Neil Houldey, McLaren’s technical director for engineering, pointed out that despite the increased software control, driver talent remains a key differentiator. The best drivers are those who can understand and adapt to the demands of managing energy deployment and throttle consistency. This new aspect of driver skill requires a more cerebral and disciplined approach, balancing aggression with energy conservation to optimise lap times.

The current power unit regulations limit the amount of energy that can be stored and require software to manage battery recharge and deployment for both safety and performance reasons. Differences in deployment schedules can create tenths of a second gaps in lap times, but over the course of a season, driver skill still plays a decisive role. Managing these constraints effectively separates the fastest drivers from the rest.

While software algorithms influence certain performance aspects, the combination of car, driver, and engineering remains crucial. Drivers must now incorporate energy management into their racecraft, adjusting their style to the new technical realities. This evolution does not diminish the importance of raw driving ability but rather adds a layer of complexity to the skill set required in Formula 1® today.
