Antonelli began the race from pole position but slipped to third at the start. He quickly regained ground by overtaking Lewis Hamilton and began closing in on race leader Charles Leclerc, benefiting from fresher tyres. His performance suggested a potential challenge for victory as he narrowed the gap to Leclerc.
However, on lap 41, Antonelli encountered a significant problem when the front-left wheel shield detached from his car. This issue affected the handling and forced him to make two additional pit stops. The car’s compromised condition also led to track limits infringements, resulting in a five-second penalty. These difficulties caused Antonelli to fall back to tenth place before a late Safety Car period, triggered by Max Verstappen’s spin, bunched up the field. Ultimately, Antonelli finished in 16th position, outside the points.
Earlier in the weekend, Antonelli had secured victory in the Sprint race, which had positioned him well for the main event. Despite the setback in the Grand Prix, he maintained a championship lead over teammate George Russell, although it was reduced from 40 to 25 points. This race marked Antonelli’s second non-scoring outing of the season, following a previous car issue that cost him a second-place finish in Barcelona.
Reflecting on the race, Antonelli described the experience as “going from bad to worse” and “tough to swallow.” He acknowledged the frustration of losing valuable points but emphasized the importance of recovering and moving forward stronger in the championship.
