Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s pole position at the 2026 United States Grand Prix highlighted the progress Mercedes has made with its car upgrades introduced earlier in the season. Despite the challenges in setting up the updated W17, the team’s efforts are beginning to show tangible results on the Circuit of the Americas track.

Antonelli secured his first pole position since the Belgian Grand Prix in July, edging out Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar in qualifying. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton followed in fourth and fifth places respectively, while George Russell qualified sixth. The qualifying session demonstrated a competitive field, with Mercedes making a notable step forward.

The upgrades Mercedes brought in Malaysia have made the W17 faster but also more difficult to balance. A new front wing, which was tested at the Singapore Grand Prix, was deployed in Austin to improve aerodynamic performance. Antonelli credited the team’s continuous work since Singapore for the improvement, acknowledging that the car’s setup remains a complex task but that the results are now becoming clearer.

Antonelli’s clean run during qualifying, avoiding track limits, contributed to his strong performance. While his chances of clinching the championship in Texas remain remote, they are not entirely out of reach, depending on race results involving his teammates and rivals. Both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell qualified behind Antonelli, which keeps the title possibilities open, albeit slim.

The qualifying session also underlined the ongoing challenge Mercedes faces in extracting the full potential from the upgraded car. The balance and setup complexity require continued attention, but the pole position suggests the team is moving in the right direction. Meanwhile, Red Bull Racing and Ferrari remain close competitors, with Verstappen and Leclerc showing solid pace.

Antonelli emphasized his focus on the race itself, aiming to maintain concentration and deliver his best performance under the current circumstances. His comments reflect a measured approach to the weekend, acknowledging the progress made while recognizing the work still ahead for Mercedes.

This qualifying result offers a snapshot of Mercedes’ development path this season, showing that the upgrades introduced have started to yield improvements despite their complexity. The team’s ongoing efforts to refine the car’s balance will be key to sustaining competitiveness in the races to come.
