Kimi Antonelli secured a commanding victory at the 2026 United States Grand Prix in Austin, further extending his lead in the Drivers’ Championship. Starting from pole position, Antonelli capitalised on a slow start from Max Verstappen and maintained control throughout the race with a one-stop tyre strategy, marking his ninth win of the season.
The race saw Charles Leclerc finish in second place, achieving his second consecutive runner-up result, while Max Verstappen recovered to claim third despite facing car issues during the event. Lewis Hamilton contributed to Ferrari’s points haul by finishing fourth, and Lando Norris completed the top five after struggling with tyre degradation that prevented a potential podium finish.
Antonelli’s performance was praised by Mercedes Executive Director Toto Wolff, who described the pole lap as a “miracle lap.” The race featured a variety of strategies, with most leading drivers opting for two-stop plans, contrasting with Antonelli’s successful one-stop approach.
George Russell received a five-second penalty for track limits infringements, which saw him finish in eighth place. The race was also marked by three retirements: Franco Colapinto, Ollie Bearman, and Valtteri Bottas. Bottas’s exit late in the race triggered a Virtual Safety Car period, impacting the closing stages of the event.
Haas struggled to score points at their home race, while Williams extended their run without points to three consecutive races. Antonelli’s victory brings him closer to securing his first Drivers’ Championship, though the title is still dependent on the outcomes of the remaining races in the season.
The next round on the calendar is the Mexico City Grand Prix, scheduled for October 30 to November 1, 2026. Antonelli’s performance in Austin underlined his strong pace and strategic execution, positioning him favourably as the championship progresses.
