Alpine finds itself in a challenging development battle with Racing Bulls and several other midfield teams as the 2026 Formula 1® season reaches its midpoint. Once the clear leader of the midfield pack, Alpine is now striving to keep pace amid a wave of upgrades from rivals.
Earlier in the season, Alpine held fifth place in the Teams' Championship, benefiting from consistent points finishes and a standout podium by Pierre Gasly in Monaco. However, recent races, including Hungary, have seen Racing Bulls overtake Alpine after introducing a more substantial upgrade package. Alpine’s last significant update came at the Miami Grand Prix, leaving the team trailing by five points behind Racing Bulls going into the summer break, with both teams having scored 61 points before Hungary.
Steve Nielsen, Alpine’s Managing Director, described the situation as a “development war” involving Racing Bulls, Aston Martin, Williams, and others. The midfield battle is intensifying as these teams bring forward notable upgrades to improve their cars’ performance. Alpine currently sits sixth in the standings, maintaining a 40-point gap over Haas, with further upgrades planned for the second half of the season.
In Hungary, Alpine faced additional pressure as Audi showed a notable performance improvement, finishing ahead of both Alpine drivers, Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto. Both drivers expressed dissatisfaction with the car’s handling and overall performance during the race, emphasizing the need for progress in the upcoming events.
The competitive midfield environment highlights how crucial continuous development is in the current Formula 1® landscape. Alpine’s focus remains on closing the gap to Racing Bulls and other rivals by implementing upgrades that address the car’s weaknesses.
