Allan McNish, now Audi’s first Formula 1® Racing Director, has shared insights from his extensive motorsport career, reflecting on the lessons he learned from Ayrton Senna and his time with Audi. These experiences have shaped his approach to leadership within the high-pressure environment of Formula 1®.
McNish’s journey through motorsport is notable for its diversity and resilience. Starting as a McLaren test driver at 19, he had the opportunity to test alongside Ayrton Senna in 1989. This early exposure impressed upon him the importance of work ethic and focus, beyond just raw talent. His path later led him to race in Formula 1® with Toyota in 2002, after a successful career in sportscar racing where he secured three wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Porsche and Audi.
His time at Audi also brought valuable lessons in team dynamics and long-term strategy, influenced strongly by Audi’s former racing director Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. McNish credits Ullrich with instilling a focus on accountability and building a cohesive team culture, principles he now applies in his Formula 1® role. After retiring from driving following his final World Endurance Championship and Le Mans victories, McNish transitioned into management, including a stint as a Formula E team principal and driver management.
McNish reflects on the evolution of data and technology in Formula 1®, noting that while data analysis has become increasingly important, the ultimate measure remains the stopwatch and race results.
