Kimi Antonelli’s promising challenge for victory at the 2026 British Grand Prix was cut short by a mechanical failure that severely impacted his race. Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff expressed his disappointment after the young driver’s car suffered a front-left wheel shield issue, which forced multiple pit stops and ultimately left Antonelli outside the points in 15th place.
Antonelli had started the race from pole position and came into the weekend on the back of a Sprint race win. Although he lost the lead at the start to Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, Antonelli managed to overtake Hamilton later on. He extended his first stint on medium tyres and rejoined the track 7.5 seconds behind Leclerc, now on fresh hard tyres. With faster lap times, he was closing the gap and was expected to catch Leclerc with around five to six laps remaining.
However, the situation changed dramatically when the front-left wheel shield on Antonelli’s car failed near Turn 9. This issue compromised the car’s handling and forced the driver to make several unscheduled pit stops. While dealing with the problem, Antonelli also received a five-second penalty for track limits violations. The combination of these setbacks ended his strong race effort, leaving him well down the order.
Toto Wolff reflected on the incident by stating that a car “should not break” in such a way, suggesting that without the mechanical failure, Antonelli would have been engaged in an “epic battle” for the win against Leclerc. Mercedes is currently investigating the cause of the wheel shield failure to avoid similar issues in the future.
The mechanical problem also had implications for the championship standings. Antonelli’s lead over his Mercedes teammate George Russell was reduced to 25 points following the British Grand Prix. This race marked Antonelli’s second non-scoring weekend of the season, after a previous retirement in Barcelona, which was also due to a car issue.
Despite the setback, Antonelli showed strong pace throughout the weekend, including his Sprint race victory and pole position in qualifying. The incident at Silverstone highlighted the fine margins in Formula 1® where reliability can have a decisive impact on race outcomes. Mercedes will be keen to address the technical issue to support Antonelli’s championship campaign moving forward.
