Max Verstappen’s recent simulator sessions for the 2026 British Grand Prix at Silverstone revealed just how different the upcoming race is expected to be in terms of energy management. The Red Bull Racing driver’s reaction during these runs highlighted the unique challenges posed by the circuit’s layout under the new technical regulations.

Unlike previous European rounds such as Monaco and the Red Bull Ring, where energy recovery and deployment felt more natural, Silverstone’s fast and flowing corners offer very few heavy braking zones. This limits opportunities for drivers to recover energy, making it tougher to manage the battery charge throughout the lap. Verstappen’s laughter during the simulator runs was a spontaneous response to the unfamiliar demands of this energy management puzzle.

Silverstone’s sequence of high-speed corners—Copse, Maggots, and Becketts—will be particularly demanding. Drivers will have to maintain flat-out speeds through these sections while having very little battery energy available, a stark contrast to previous years. Verstappen noted that this will make the British Grand Prix feel very different from what teams and drivers have experienced so far in the 2026 season.

Verstappen also compared the current generation of Formula 1® cars to those from the ground-effect era. While the older cars were less natural in slow corners, they excelled in high-speed sections. Today’s cars, however, require more careful energy management and feel less intuitive to drive, especially on circuits like Silverstone where energy recovery is limited.

He praised the ongoing dialogue between drivers, the FIA, and teams, which has influenced regulation changes planned for 2027 and 2028. These include adjustments to the energy split favoring a higher contribution from the internal combustion engine (ICE), aiming to address some of the current challenges related to energy management. Verstappen acknowledged that the 2026 season has been complicated by technical issues but expressed optimism about the direction of car development moving forward.

This insight into Verstappen’s simulator experience offers a clear indication of how the 2026 British Grand Prix could present a distinct test for drivers and teams alike. The energy management demands at Silverstone are set to reshape how the race unfolds, emphasizing the technical and strategic aspects of the sport under the new regulations.
