George Russell’s slow start at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix was traced back to a technical issue with his Mercedes engine software, which caused erratic engine revs and triggered the car’s anti-stall system. This problem significantly affected his launch off the grid and led to a loss of positions early in the race.

The issue originated after an engine change was required following a water leak caused by Russell hitting a kerb during qualifying. At the race start, telemetry data revealed that Russell’s engine revs spiked unpredictably, reaching up to 12,800 rpm, compared to the stable 12,300 rpm recorded by his teammate Kimi Antonelli. This fluctuation forced Russell to reduce his throttle input drastically, from around 30% down to below 10%, in an attempt to regain control. However, the engine’s response remained inconsistent, causing the revs to fluctuate and eventually triggering the anti-stall system.

As a result, Russell was only able to apply about 9% throttle at the launch, whereas Antonelli maintained around 30%. This difference led to a significant drop in engine speed for Russell, falling to approximately 4,500 rpm compared to Antonelli’s 5,800 rpm, which contributed to the slow getaway and loss of track positions. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff confirmed that the issue was technical and beyond Russell’s control, highlighting the series of mistakes and reliability challenges the team had faced in the first half of the season.

Russell himself described the throttle as unresponsive during the start, explaining that his pedal modulation was a reaction to the engine glitch rather than the cause of it. The team had previously encountered a similar software issue during pre-season testing in Bahrain, indicating that this was not an entirely new problem. Russell also reflected on the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend as a frustrating experience, expressing the need for a break after a challenging first half of the season.
