Lando Norris claimed his first victory of the 2026 Formula 1® season at the Hungarian Grand Prix, capitalizing on the misfortune of his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, who retired with a gearbox failure late in the race. Max Verstappen secured second place despite ongoing handling difficulties with his car throughout the weekend, while Andrea Kimi Antonelli completed the podium in third after a challenging one-stop strategy.
Piastri had taken the early lead by overtaking polesitter Norris at Turn 2 and controlled much of the first half of the race. However, he lost time navigating lapped traffic, which allowed Norris to close the gap. Unfortunately for Piastri, his race ended on lap 56 due to a gearbox failure, handing the lead and eventual win to Norris. Verstappen managed to hold onto second place despite a difficult weekend with his Red Bull car’s behaviour. Antonelli’s attempt at a one-stop strategy didn’t pay off fully, but he still finished third.
The race also saw Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc finish fourth and fifth respectively. Hamilton briefly overtook Antonelli but later lost the position following a penalty that was applied to Antonelli. George Russell overcame a poor start caused by an anti-stall activation to recover to seventh place. Carlos Sainz received a five-second penalty for ignoring blue flags during a battle involving Piastri. Meanwhile, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas retired due to brake fires, highlighting some of the reliability challenges faced during the race.
Strategic pit stops played a significant role in the race dynamics, with Hamilton and Verstappen closely contesting track position during the first round of stops. The Hungaroring’s twisty layout made overtaking difficult, which was evident in the way Norris struggled to pass Piastri before the latter’s retirement. Antonelli’s one-stop plan was a gamble that ultimately left him vulnerable but still secured a podium finish.
Heading into the short break before the next round, Antonelli leads the championship standings by 50 points over Hamilton and 59 points ahead of Russell. The next race on the calendar is the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, scheduled for August 23. This event will provide another opportunity for teams and drivers to assess their form and strategies following the Hungarian Grand Prix.
