During the qualifying sessions at the British Grand Prix in 2026, Mercedes introduced an unusual but effective electrical strategy involving their MGU-K system. Unlike typical behaviour where drivers keep the throttle pinned to the finish line, Mercedes drivers lifted off the accelerator a few metres before crossing it. This tactic was notably observed with Mercedes drivers George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli during qualifying. It requires precise software control and extensive simulator practice, as it goes against the intuitive driving style of maintaining throttle through the line. Ferrari and McLaren were also mentioned in the context of electrical strategies, with Ferrari using a related but different throttle management approach to maximize MGU-K deployment on straights. McLaren’s team principal Andrea Stella expressed surprise at Mercedes’ method and noted that replicating it might need specific power unit components not available to all teams.

The effectiveness of this electrical trick is particularly pronounced at Silverstone, where the short distance from the final corner to the finish line allows Mercedes to exploit the regulation’s allowance for rapid power reduction in that section. By lifting off the throttle at just the right moment, they can trigger the instantaneous power cut, conserving energy that can be used for a final acceleration burst.

While the details of the software and hardware changes remain undisclosed, the strategy highlights the fine margins teams explore in qualifying to extract every possible advantage.
