Mercedes is currently investigating a notable straight-line speed deficit affecting George Russell compared to his teammate Kimi Antonelli. This issue has been apparent during recent race weekends, including the 2026 Belgian Grand Prix qualifying session, where Russell was over half a second slower than Antonelli, primarily due to a lack of pace on the straights.
The team initially considered that Russell’s driving style might be contributing to the problem. His approach, involving later braking and aggressive throttle application, was thought to cause early depletion of battery energy, which could have compromised his lap times. However, after detailed analysis, both Russell and Mercedes concluded that his driving style was not the root cause of the deficit.
The most significant speed difference has been observed on the final straight between Blanchimont and the chicane at Spa-Francorchamps, where Antonelli’s car consistently registers a few kilometres per hour more than Russell’s. This gap has been a recurring concern since it was first noticed during the Austrian Grand Prix and has persisted through Silverstone and Spa.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has acknowledged that the team currently lacks a clear explanation for Russell’s straight-line speed shortfall. The investigation is ongoing, with all potential factors under review, including differences in power unit freshness between the two cars. Russell himself has expressed frustration at losing between two and six tenths of a second on the straights each lap, despite applying full throttle.
The team has ruled out other possible causes such as brake issues and has confirmed that the problem is not related to Russell’s driving technique. Mercedes continues to work on identifying the underlying technical factors responsible for this performance gap, aiming to restore balance between their drivers.
While the exact cause remains unclear, the situation highlights the complexities teams face in managing performance across two cars in the highly competitive environment of Formula 1®. Mercedes’ efforts to resolve this issue will be closely watched as the season progresses.
