His concerns echo those of other drivers, including Max Verstappen and Esteban Ocon, who have also spoken out about the rising costs in karting.
Max Verstappen pointed out that the cost of a single mini kart race can reach between £10,000 and £12,000, emphasizing the financial strain on young racers. He supports the increased use of simulators as a more affordable training alternative. Esteban Ocon added that if he were starting karting today, the high expenses might have prevented him from progressing, suggesting a combination of simulator and real karting could offer a more accessible path.
In response to these challenges, the FIA has introduced a three-year Global Karting Plan aimed at lowering costs and creating alternative development routes. This initiative includes the launch of an Arrive and Drive World Cup and the establishment of a Karting Excellence Centre. These efforts seek to provide more affordable opportunities and reduce the financial burden on young drivers and their families.
Hamilton’s call for action reflects a broader concern within the Formula 1® community about the accessibility of motorsport at its grassroots level. The escalating expenses risk narrowing the talent pool by limiting participation to those with significant financial backing.
