Hadjar to start last after Spa grid penalty

Hadjar to start last after Spa grid penalty

FansBRANDS® Team |

Isack Hadjar is set to start from the back of the grid at the 2026 Belgian Grand Prix after receiving a substantial grid penalty for exceeding his power unit element allocations. The penalty comes as a result of Red Bull's decision to fit new components on Hadjar’s car at Spa-Francorchamps.

Hadjar has surpassed his season limit for several key power unit elements, including the internal combustion engine (ICE), turbocharger, and exhaust. According to the regulations, the first time a driver exceeds the allocation for a particular element, a 10-place grid penalty is applied. Subsequent exceedances of other elements at the same event result in additional 5-place drops. In Hadjar’s case, the combined penalties exceed 15 grid places, which means he will start at the rear of the grid regardless of his qualifying position.

Spa-Francorchamps is often seen as a suitable venue for taking engine penalties due to its multiple overtaking opportunities, which can help drivers recover positions during the race. Alongside Hadjar, other drivers are also facing grid penalties at the Belgian Grand Prix. Lando Norris of McLaren will serve a 10-place grid drop for exceeding his Control Electronics allocation, while Lance Stroll from Aston Martin will receive a penalty for surpassing his Motor Generator Unit-Kinetic (MGU-K) allocation.

The penalty system for power unit components is designed to limit the number of parts teams can use over the course of a season, encouraging reliability and cost control. When a driver exceeds these limits, the resulting grid penalties can significantly affect their starting position. However, teams sometimes choose to take these penalties strategically at circuits like Spa, where overtaking is more feasible.

Oracle Red Bull Racing’s decision to introduce new power unit elements for Hadjar reflects the ongoing technical challenges and strategic considerations teams face in managing their engine allocations throughout the season. Meanwhile, McLaren and Aston Martin are also managing their component usage carefully, as indicated by the penalties for Norris and Stroll.

These grid penalties will shape the starting order for the Belgian Grand Prix, with Hadjar moving to the back of the grid and Norris and Stroll also dropping down the order. The situation highlights the balance teams must strike between performance upgrades and regulatory limits on power unit components in the 2026 Formula 1® season.
