Leonardo Fornaroli is set to take part in Free Practice 1 at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, marking his second appearance in a Formula 1® session with McLaren. The 21-year-old, who has claimed back-to-back titles in FIA Formula 3 and Formula 2, will replace regular driver Oscar Piastri for the opening practice session. This opportunity follows Fornaroli’s debut in FP1 at the Barcelona Grand Prix, where he drove Lando Norris’s car.
Alongside Fornaroli’s FP1 run, McLaren plans to introduce a series of upgrades to their MCL40 car at the Hungaroring. The package includes a new floor and updated aerodynamic components aimed at improving the car’s performance on a circuit known for its high downforce demands. Additionally, the team will test a developed version of an experimental rear wing during FP1, which was initially intended for use at the Austrian Grand Prix. However, this rear wing is not scheduled for race deployment in Hungary or the following Dutch Grand Prix.
The Hungaroring presents specific challenges, with its combination of tight corners and limited overtaking opportunities requiring careful tyre management and strategic power unit deployment. Randy Singh, McLaren’s Senior Director of Racing, emphasized these factors and the importance of extracting maximum performance from the upgrades to maintain momentum through the summer break and into the latter part of the season.
Fornaroli has expressed his eagerness to gain further experience in Formula 1® and contribute to McLaren’s development efforts. His preparation includes extensive work in the simulator and performance facilities, aiming to support the team’s programme effectively during his FP1 outing. While his role remains limited to practice sessions as a development and reserve driver, these opportunities are valuable for his progression within the sport.
McLaren’s upgrade package at Hungary is designed to address the circuit’s unique characteristics, focusing on enhancing aerodynamic efficiency and overall balance.
