Aston Martin introduced a significant aerodynamic upgrade package to their AMR26 during the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, aiming to improve airflow around the diffuser and support a higher rear ride height. These changes are designed to enhance the car’s underfloor performance, aligning with the high rake angle philosophy favored by the team’s renowned designer Adrian Newey.

The upgrade package, comprising 16 modifications, was first seen during Friday practice sessions. Key elements include a slimmer nose and reprofiled front wing components that channel more air inward between the front wheels and the nose. Adjustments to the front wing endplates and vanes also aim to better manage the airflow around the front tyres, which is crucial for aerodynamic efficiency.

Behind the front wheels, the regulatory floor boards have been lowered and reshaped. This reduces the reliance on guide vanes and improves the airflow beneath the car’s floor. Additionally, the sidepods have been redesigned with a wider and less angled radiator inlet, often described as an ‘overbite’, and a slimmer overall profile. This revision increases the volume of the undercut area, helping to accelerate airflow along the floor edges.

The rear suspension arms and their sheathing have also been modified, likely to better accommodate the high rake setup that Aston Martin is pursuing. This aerodynamic theme focuses on making the high rake concept more practical and effective within the current regulatory framework. The upgrades are intended to speed up the airflow under the car, which is critical for diffuser performance and overall downforce generation.

Fernando Alonso was seen driving the upgraded AMR26 during the sessions, although no direct performance data or driver feedback about the effectiveness of these upgrades has been publicly shared. The technical changes reflect a clear effort by Aston Martin to refine their aerodynamic package and improve competitiveness during the 2026 season.

While the impact of these upgrades on race results remains to be seen, the detailed modifications underline Aston Martin’s commitment to evolving their car’s design philosophy. The focus on diffuser airflow and high rake operation shows the team’s strategic approach to maximizing aerodynamic efficiency under the current Formula 1® regulations.
